Basic Midwifery
The Basic Midwifery programme is a three-year (six-semester) course approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and offered in the College of Nursing Sciences Abeokuta, Ijebu Ode, and Ilaro campuses. It is designed to provide students with the practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and clinical experience needed to qualify as Registered Midwives (RM).
Training covers care and support before, during, and after pregnancy, labour, and the postpartum period. Students learn to promote safe deliveries, detect complications, provide emergency care, conduct births, care for newborns, offer family planning services, and carry out prenatal exams and tests.
Graduates earn the Registered Midwife (RM) qualification, enabling them to work in tertiary, secondary, and primary healthcare institutions, as well as maternal and child hospitals in Nigeria and globally.
Basic Midwifery Admission Requirement
- The Basic Midwifery Programme has the same academic requirements as Basic Nursing—five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, obtained in no more than two sittings,
- Acceptable combinations include WAEC/WAEC, NECO/NECO, or WAEC/NECO. NABTEB results cannot be combined with WAEC, NECO, or another NABTEB. If you’re applying with NABTEB, all five required credits must be in NABTEB alone.

Community Midwifery
The Community Midwifery programme is a two-year (four-semester) course approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and offered exclusively at the College of Nursing Sciences, Abeokuta. It is available only to female indigenes of Ogun State who reside in their local communities. Students are sponsored and bonded by the Ogun State Local Government Service Commission and, upon graduation, are required to work for two years in their respective communities.
The programme equips students with the skills, knowledge, and clinical experience needed to become Licensed Community Midwives (LCM), focusing on maternal and newborn care at the community level. Training includes prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care; family planning; preconception services; detection of complications; emergency measures; and newborn care, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife.
Graduates work primarily in Primary Healthcare Institutions. Those wishing to become Registered Midwives may proceed to a two-year midwifery programme, provided they meet the required O’level qualifications.
Community Midwifery Admission Requirement
- For Community Midwifery, you must have at least four (4) credits including English Language, Biology, and any two science subjects from WAEC, NECO, and/or NABTEB, obtained in no more than two sittings.
