Community Nursing programme is a 2 years, 4 semesters Nursing programme, approved by the Nursing and Nursing Council of Nigeria (NMCN). The programme is designed to train students on practical community nursing skills equipping them with the knowledge and clinical experience they need to become a Licensed Community Nurse (LCN) providing nursing care to both sick and individuals who are not sick assisting them in activities that would promote health at the community level where they live and work.
Additionally, Licensed Community Nurses (LCN) as well provides support, care and advice to patients with medical and surgical conditions; some of which include taking vital signs, monitoring patients, administering medications, taking patient record and providing health education etc AT COMMUNITY LEVEL under the supervision of Registered Nurse or Registered Public Health Nurse. Licensed Community Nurses also offer advice and emotional support to patient and their families as well as follow-up care.
Licensed Community Nurses are only permitted to work in Primary Healthcare Institutions (Primary Health Care and Comprehensive Health Care). Licensed Community Nurses who want to continue their study to become Registered Nurses will be admitted to a two-year program in a School/College of Nursing if they have 5 credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
